Moving Your Business from Excel to Proper Software
Spreadsheets are a good start. Here is how to know when to move, and how to do it safely.
Excel runs a great many businesses, and there is nothing wrong with that. It is flexible and everybody knows it. The trouble starts when the business grows and the sheet does not.
The warning signs are familiar: several versions of one file, formulas that only one person understands, and numbers that nobody fully trusts. If that person goes on leave, work slows down.
Before you buy or build anything, write down how the work moves today. Who enters the data, who checks it and who needs the report? This list is more useful than any feature list.
Then clean your data. Remove duplicates, agree on one spelling for customers and products, and decide how much history you really need. Moving messy data only moves the mess.
Move one part first, such as billing or stock, and run it beside Excel for a short time. Compare the results before you stop using the old sheet. Keep the old file safe as a record.
Excel can stay for small tasks and one-off analysis. The goal is one trusted source for the numbers that run your business.
