How to Move Data to a New System Safely
Data migration is where many projects go wrong. A careful, step-by-step approach reduces the risk.
New software is only as good as the data inside it. Moving that data is often harder than expected, so plan for it early.
List what you have, where it sits and who owns it. Decide what really must move. Old records may be better kept in an archive.
Clean before you move. Fix duplicates and agree on formats for dates, phone numbers and names.
Do a trial move on a copy, and check totals: customer counts, outstanding balances and stock values should match.
Take a full backup before the final move. Choose a quiet time, and keep the old system readable for a while in case something is missing.
